Specialised Career Counselling

We assist employees, whatever level, regarding working with an executive or senior manager who is "difficult to work with" otherwise called a Malevolent Executive. These difficulties include:

  • Sexually based innuendos and flirtation (either gender)
  • Uses flattery which you feel is insincere
  • Micro-managing you
  • Taking all the credit of your work as his or hers
  • Unethical behaviour
  • Saying one thing and doing the opposite
  • Back-stabbing of others, usually competitors in the company
  • Being unfairly stated as a poor performer
  • Having to clean up the executive's errors and mess
  • Pressing you to do things that you don't want to do
  • Corporate drinking culture that you have to join in
  • Asking you to do things that are wrong
  • Hiding his or her mistakes
  • Executive is ego-driven and needs the limelight
  • Having to deal with their anger
  • Being verbally abused
  • Taunting you that they (or their department etc) is better than yours
  • Others come to you with complaints, but the Board or CEO thinks that he or she is very competent or gets results
  • Being asked to do illegal activities, eg ‘fudge the expenses’ or ‘little tax dodges’
  • Feeling discriminated against (gender, race etc) but not quite sure
  • Getting sidelined at Board or Executive Team meetings
  • Giving you inordinate amounts of work with short deadlines
  • Giving you work that he or she should be doing
  • Wraps the CEO or Board around his or her little finger

Don't put up with it!

The 'difficult' executive is using you for his or her own ends, and in doing so it compromises your integrity. This in turn creates stress on you. This results in:

  • Anxiety
  • Not being able to sleep at night
  • Getting a short fuse with loved ones
  • Not being able to be with loved ones enough

Many would leave straight away, but it is not so easy to walk away if this is an important career move in your career development, or you have to pay the mortgage or have financial responsibility for others.

How can we help you?

We do this through a discreet and highly effective counselling process. Our Career Counselling has been praised by many individuals as a safe place to vent and talk and find solutions to their pressing executive-centered problems. This is particularly the case for those who are isolated in their organisational hierarchy and feel pressed into a role that belies their true feelings. Spouses, partners and friends seldom understand the delicate processes of dealing with a difficult, toxic executive, and probably do not have the expertise to advise the right course of action. Sharing anxieties or concerns with colleagues or subordinates however, can be fatal for career development. It has been our experience (and in other well documented research) that unless properly addressed, the results of this stress can accumulate, which can lead to:

  • Physical and mental disease
  • Depression
  • Poor judgement
  • Premature aging
  • and unemployment, involuntarily or voluntary – sometimes euphemistically referred to as ‘early retirement’.

Note: if you have suicidal thoughts and feelings, you need immediate assistance. This is outside of our area of expertise, but this link will help you right now Metanoia suicidal intervention

Having a safe place vent is crucial as it can be seen as weak by others in the organization, to receive counselling. Company human resource departments and Employee Assistance Programs which offer counselling are often ruled out for fear of being seen in the same waiting room as other workers, or that they may leak confidential information. Email contact or phone calls with a company counsellor are similarly viewed as difficult to do, because a hostile environment can turn against those who need help the most.

Going online is just as effective as seeing a counsellor face-to-face. It has been found in studies of the use of telepsychiatry and interactive audio/visual services show comparable efficacy to traditional psychotherapy (Yellowlees, 2001).

We also know at Guardian Angel People that work can feel very isolating and unfriendly. With conflicts in work, priorities, and managerial demands, role effectiveness is particularly difficult without support. In addition, time pressure and high stress levels result in judgement and clear thinking being short-changed in these highly charged environments.

What we can do

It is our belief that few in the counselling community actually understand the nuances of executive-created workplace problems. Furthermore, their advice may not be helpful for the development of your career. We have the confidence to call ourselves experts, as we have helped many hundreds of people in the workplace and rescued their careers, putting them back on track so that they can reach their goals (see our video testimonials)

Service Philosophy

We use counselling methods with an emphasis on drawing upon your emotional energy to empower and invigorate you to action that is self-protective, yet true to your values. We know that you will have an increase in self esteem and respect for others; an increase in self worth and appreciation of others; as well as dispelling fears and anxieties so that your self-confidence is raised to effectively deal with the executive at hand. By the end of the counselling session you will have a list of strategies that will be effective and have the ability to deal positively with the source of your difficulty and take the right steps in your career.

We are not psychotherapists, or social workers. We are professional career management counsellors with considerable amounts of experience in advising people with difficult executives. We only deal with this type of career related problems, and we deal with them extremely effectively. We understand your need for urgent advice, and therefore will deliver prompt effective service to you.

Help is here for you

What we are able to do is, and have done it for hundreds of men and women before you:

  • Establish a therapeutic, safe and confidential setting.
  • Instil an immediate peace of mind.
  • An objective review of the issue.
  • Outline a plan of action that will have several positive strategies.

In addition to assisting you with your immediate problem, you will also be assessed on your existing depression and anxiety stress levels and given feedback. This provides a reliable indicator of how you are feeling. The higher the levels, the less effective you will be at work, and all the more reason to be addressed.
